A2 SIRIUS® CULTIVATED CANINE - Exclusively for graduates of SIRIUS® Adult 1 or The Complete SIRIUS® Puppy Course
First-time classes for adolescent and adult dogs are usually pretty wild and woolly affairs. Dogs bark and strain on leash and eyeball the other dogs. The dogs blow off food and toy lures, they blow off any attempts at training and they blow off their owners, which, of course, is why most people have come to class.
Exercises focus on prompt sits and downs, reliable stays, stylish heeling, calm walking on-leash and polite on-leash greetings. A prompt and reliable sit-stay or heel will prevent of resolve just about any potential behavior or training problem, for example, a dog cannot obediently heel, or sit-stay, and misbehave at the same time.
Additionally, specific exercises have been designed to troubleshoot each of the four basic adolescent/adult noise-activity problems - hyperactivity, barking, jumping-up and pulling on-leash.
By alternating a problem behavior with the specific desired behavior - Jazz-up/Settle Down, Woof/Shush, Hug/Sit and Pull/Walk - it is possible to re-channel the dogs' exuberance into equally enthusiastic obedience. Alternating the two behaviors allows the once-problem behavior to be used as a reward for the desired response. The dog soon learns to enjoy sitting, settling, shushing and walking by your side and as a bonus, you have trained the once-problem behaviors on cue, e.g., to woof on command.
Your dog is ready for Cultivated Canine if s/he can focus on you most of the time in class, and can sit and lie down and walk on leash without the aid of a lure. If you're not quite there yet, you're welcome to repeat SIRIUS® Courteous Canine for more practice before moving forward.
