Miki Merin snuggles a sweet pup

Miki Merin, M.A., CTC, grew up with dogs and cats and a great love for all animals. She had cocker spaniels in her home in the US, and various types of cats during her summers in Israel. After attending a puppy class with her best friend's German Shepherd puppy in 2002, she knew that one day she wanted to be teaching a class just like that. The following year, during her graduate studies in Linguistics at UC Berkeley, she began her internship with SIRIUS® and apprenticeship with Bobbi Durston. She gained experience working with different dogs by volunteering at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society with the Open Paw program there, and fostering dogs for the Milo foundation.

After graduating from Cal in 2005, she went to the Academy for Dog Trainers at the SF SPCA to obtain her Certificate in Training and Counseling. She then started her own business doing in-home boarding, rehabilitation and rehoming of rescued dogs, and private training and counseling. Her specialties are training off-leash hiking and resolving behavioral issues related to fear and anxiety. In fall of 2006, she began working with SIRIUS® as a substitute instructor, after assisting in SIRIUS® classes and apprenticing with Bobbi Durston for 3 years.

One of Miki's focal points in her professional work is to bring harmony into the bond between people and dogs through understanding and communication between the species. She completed a second Master of Arts degree in Psychology and Creativity Studies with a thesis on modern approaches to Canine Behavioral Counseling and Creativity in Animals. Currently, she teaches scent detection in the Sherlock Nose classes. She has titled two dogs in the sport, which is quite popular. She shares a house in Berkeley with her husband, daughter, two lovely dogs and two very fluffy cats.
