[D] Safe Socialization: Socialization to People, Introducing New Environments, Calm and Confident Attitude, How to Throw a Puppy Party

Learn how to toilet train, chew toy train and safely socialize your pup with people; address puppy biting, whining and crying; prepare your puppy for handling by veterinarians and groomers and prevent household behavior problems such as house soiling, destructive chewing, and chewing.

Puppy Kindergarten is a SIRIUS innovation. It is a set of four classes designed to ensure that you receive urgent training at the earliest possible time. There are three elements of puppy training that must be addressed in a puppy’s first three months of life:

1) Puppies must be thoroughly, yet safely, socialized to people so that later in life, they do not become wary or fearful of children, strangers, or men.

2) Puppies must learn to be gentle with their mouths so they do not inflict serious injury on people or animals as their jaws grow substantially stronger.

3) Puppies must learn how to live in a human home so they do not damage your belongings or suffer from separation anxiety.

Though not as urgent as the above items, puppies will be introduced to basic manners and obedience commands as well.

WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS:

Proof of vaccination is required at the first class. Proof of vaccine(s) on paper is preferred. For Puppy Kindergarten we require the first DHLPP or DHPP vaccine (specifically Distemper and Parvo) prior to first session.

Have your puppy wear a flat, buckle/snap collar – no harnesses or training collars that tighten. Please have your pup on a 6’ leash. “Flexi” leashes are not appropriate for class.

Don’t feed your puppy right before class. Instead, bring their kibble to class in a ziploc bag for use as lures and rewards while training. Also bring a few extra-tasty treats to reward your pup for their best performances. Make sure your treats are in small, bite-sized pieces that won’t fill your pup up or take long for them to eat.

We also recommend bringing a small water bowl for personal use.

The Complete Puppy Course:

This class can be taken with Puppy 1 and Puppy 2 to form a comprehensive course consisting of fourteen sessions that will guide your pup through puppyhood and into the challenging world of adolescence. Save money by registering for these classes together. Learn More

REQUIREMENTS:

Handlers: We require at least one adult per enrolled puppy. We encourage the whole family attend the class together but if children are three years or younger, a second adult must be present.

Pups must be carried into class: As a reminder, young puppies are not fully vaccinated yet. Therefore, as a precaution, we ask that you carry your puppy to class in your arms or in a carrier and avoid walking through parks or on public walkways. We ask that you DO NOT allow your puppies to greet other pups or dogs, fellow students or otherwise, outside of the classroom. This is the protocol for all Puppy Kindergarten classes.

Requirements:

Age: On the start date of the class, pups must be between 8 weeks and 11 weeks old (i.e., 56-83 days).

If your dog is older than 11 weeks old, but still between 12-18 weeks old, Puppy Training I is the age-appropriate class to start with.
If your pup is older than 18 weeks old, Basic Household Manners is the age-appropriate class to start with.

Vaccine: First DHLPP or DHPP vaccine prior to first session.

For puppies 12-18 weeks old. $200 for 5 weekly 50 minute sessions.

Puppy I is so much fun and hugely educational! Classes focus on puppy biting, socialization with other dogs and people (especially children men and strangers), calming and handling, attention, basic obedience skills (come, sit, down, stand, stay, heel and walk on leash) and household manners (crate training, toilet training and chew toy training).

Our expert instructors will teach you how to use food in training without it becoming a bribe so that your puppy responds reliably whether you have food or not.

Learn how to improve your puppy's focus, speed of recall and length of stays off-leash, at a distance and when distracted. Learn how to introduce your puppy to people, places, dogs and new situations so that they thoroughly enjoy the company of all kinds of folks, especially children, men and strangers.

Learn how to teach your puppy to play Fetch and Tug and to use these games as rewards in training.

It is not required but it will provide you with best puppy training experience possible, especially if you follow Puppy 1 with Puppy 2. Save money by registering for these classes together. WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS

Proof of vaccinations is required at the first class. Please bring proof of two DHLPP or DHPP vaccinations given 2-3 weeks apart -- both vaccines must have been administered after 8 weeks of age and the second vaccination given at least 7 days prior to the start-date of class.

We require at least one adult per enrolled puppy. We encourage the whole family attend the class together but if children are three years or younger, a second adult must be present.

REQUIREMENTS

Requirements:

Age: On the start date of class, pups must be between 12-18 weeks old (i.e., 84-126 days).

If your dog is older than 18 weeks old and has not completed Puppy Training I, Basic Household Manners is the age-appropriate class.

Vaccine: Proof of two DHLPP or DHPP vaccinations given 2-3 weeks apart -- both vaccines administered after 8 weeks of age and the second vaccination given at least 7 days prior to the start-date of class.

Early puppy training is as easy as it is enjoyable. Much more challenging though, is to ensure that your puppy maintains bite inhibition, remains socialized and friendly to other dogs and people, and continues to pay heed to your instructions while working through adolescence. Training focuses on proofing verbal control without the need for food lures or rewards, or any other training tools. Exercises include distance sits in play (for the home, yard, dog parks and off-leash walks), settle down, rock-solid stays, and both off-leash and on-leash walking and heeling. Puppy 2 will help you teach your adolescent pup to be calm, attentive and responsive and to respond quickly, willingly and happily, especially when distracted, off-leash, and at a distance.

This course prepares students and their dogs to take the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, a certification program designed to reward dogs who demonstrate good manners at home and in the community. The class is a forum to practice all of the skill necessary to pass the CGC test such as, accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, supervised separation from the owner, and many other skills that prove a dog's social-savvy. Passing the CGC test has many benefits. For example, it can expedite acceptance into Animal Assisted Therapy programs, advanced behavioral or agility classes, or even doggie daycare or boarding facilities. More valuable than the piece of paper, however, is the piece of mind that your dog is a mannerly, well-behaved member of your household - and the community at large.
