Alex Militar

Alex’s journey into dog training started at the Berkeley Humane Society in 2003 where he met Kelly Gorman-Dunbar. Kelly was showing the staff how to use the Open Paw Shelter Program to provide the dogs at the shelter with the training and socialization they need to find new homes where they would be happy, well-behaved, and welcomed for the rest of their lives. 

This inspired Alex to learn more about dog training so he could do more to help dogs get adopted and stay adopted. In 2010 he left the shelter world to further his dog training education at Trish King's Behavior Academy. He graduated in 2012 and went on to intern with Trish King at the Marin Humane Society. 

After a summer interning, Alex decided to pursue private training when he realized that some behaviors were not immediately apparent in the shelter, and only became obvious when the dogs moved into a home environment. Over the years, Alex had seen how fear-based problems were the most common cause for dogs to get surrendered to shelters so he decided to make that the focus of his work as a dog trainer.

Alex has always had dogs and loves the companionship and love that comes from living with dogs. He loves helping people and seeing the joy that dogs experience when they make their owners happy, and he loves seeing the joy that a dog's owners feel when they start to understand their dog and build a strong bond built on mutual respect, effective communication, and trust.

 Alex currently lives in Albany with a 12-year-old Boerboel named Azuki.
