Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies between 8-12 weeks (56-84 days) old on the first day of class.

For the best possible education for your puppy, you should enroll in a Puppy Kindergarten Class that begins when your pup is 8-12 weeks of age, and also enroll in a Puppy Training I Class that begins before your pup reaches 18 weeks of age.

(offered in Berkeley, Palo Alto, Oakland, Corte Madera, San Ramon, and Santa Clara)

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

Please note: Puppy Kindergarten classes have rolling enrollment. You can start with any of the following five modules.

A. Household Training: Potty Training, Chew Toy Training, Crate Training, Barking, and Resource Guarding.

B. Puppy Biting and Handling: Catch, Cuddle, Examine, and Restrain your Puppy. Teach Bite Inhibition, Frustration Tolerance, Calming, and Gentling.

C. Manners & Safety Training: Puppy Obedience Training, Manners, Impulse Control, Boundary Training, Settling Down, and Training Games. 

D. Safe Socialization: Socialization to People, Introducing New Environments, Developing a Calm and Confident Attitude, and How to Throw a Puppy Party.

E. Basic Training Foundations: Introduction to Basic Skills, Lure/Reward Training, Marker Words, Sit, Down, Stand, Touch, and Eye Contact.

Requirements: 

Age: 8-12 weeks (56-84 days) old on the first day of class.

Vaccination: For Puppy Kindergarten we require the first DHLPP or DHPP vaccine (specifically Distemper and Parvo) given at least 7 days prior to the first session. Proof of vaccination may be required at the first class.

Handlers: We require at least one adult per enrolled puppy. We encourage the whole family to attend the class together but if children are three years or younger, a second adult must be present.

Pups must be carried into class: As a reminder, young puppies are not fully vaccinated yet. Therefore, as a precaution, we ask that you carry your puppy to class in your arms or in a carrier and avoid walking through parks or on public walkways. We ask that you DO NOT allow your puppies to greet other pups or dogs, fellow students or otherwise, outside of the classroom. This is the protocol for all In-Person Puppy Kindergarten classes.

Puppy I is for puppies between 12-18 weeks (85-126 days) old on the first day of class.

Puppy I is offered with a rolling enrollment system so you can start training your pup ASAP and so your pup can benefit from meeting more people and puppies.

PUPPY I CURRICULUM

In your SIRIUS Puppy I class, you will learn how to teach your pup the essential skills that every pet dog needs to learn:

  • Basic Positions: Sit, Down, Stand & Stay
  • Come when Called, Follow & Heel
  • Shush (Stop Barking) & Settle Down
  • Off, Take It & Thank You (Drop It)

You'll learn how to teach your pup these skills, as well as how to motivate your pup so they WANT to listen to you and do what you ask, even when they are off-leash, at a distance, or engaged/distracted by something else!

You will also learn how to prevent and resolve the most common unwanted puppy behaviors:

  • Fearfulness, Anxiety, Reactivity & Biting
  • Excessive Barking and Crying
  • Destructive Chewing & Potty Accidents
  • Guarding Valued Objects, Running Away & Playing Keep Away
  • Jumping Up, Hyperactivity, & Excessively Rowdy Play

You’ll also receive an unbeatable collection of resources to support your training at home:

  • Three months of access to our library of online courses, including our comprehensive, self-paced Essential Puppy Training Course

Requirements: 

Age: On the start date of class, pups must be between 12-18 weeks (85-126 days) old.

Vaccine: For Puppy I we require two DHLPP or DHPP vaccinations given 2-3 weeks apart -- both vaccines administered after 8 weeks of age and the second vaccination given at least 5 days prior to the start-date of class. Proof of vaccination may be required at the first class.

Handlers: We require at least one adult per enrolled puppy. We encourage the whole family to attend the class together but if children are three years or younger, a second adult must be present.

For puppies under 8 months old. This class is $249 for 5 sessions total. Each session is approximately 50 minutes and takes place in-person.

PUPPY TRAINING II CURRICULUM

Early puppy training is as easy as it is enjoyable. Much more challenging though, is to ensure that your puppy maintains bite inhibition, remains socialized and friendly to other dogs and people, and continues to pay heed to your instructions while working through adolescence. 

Training focuses on proofing verbal control without the need for food lures or rewards, or any other training tools. Exercises include distance sits in play (for the home, yard, dog parks and off-leash walks), settle down, rock-solid stays, and both off-leash and on-leash walking and heeling. Puppy II will help you teach your adolescent pup to be calm, attentive and responsive and to respond quickly, willingly and happily, especially when distracted, off-leash, and at a distance.

When you sign up for an In-Person Puppy Training II class, you get a series of 5 in-person classes with a skilled SIRIUS Puppy Training Instructor who will guide you and a handful of classmates through the journey of raising and training your puppies. 

You will get an opportunity to celebrate and solidify your pup’s training in an exciting and distracting environment that is also safe and secure, while simultaneously socializing your pup to new people and puppies. Your instructor will work directly with you and your pup to help you fine-tune your technique and improve your timing and positioning.

As a SIRIUS Puppy II student you will get another 3 months of access to the Essential Puppy Training Course, and Premium Puppy Training Support so you have the guidance and support you need to practice your training at home.

Requirements: 

Prerequisite: Must have completed a SIRIUS Puppy Training I within the last 4 months. If your dog is older than 18 weeks old and has not completed Puppy Training I, please start with Dog Training I.

Age: Under 8 months old.

Vaccine: For Puppy II we require dogs to have their rabies vaccine and up-to-date DHLPP/DHPP vaccine. Proof of vaccination may be required at the first class.

For dogs 18 weeks (127 days) or older on the first day of class.

DOG TRAINING I CURRICULUM (Most Dog Training I classes will address the following topics)

Off/Leave It
Come and Follow
Sit, Down, Stand, and Stay
Go To Your Bed and Settle Down
Take It (Take food and toys gently)
Thank You (Release an object)
Heeling and Loose-Leash Walking
Polite Greetings (Not jumping up when meeting people)

Requirements: 

Age: For dogs 18 weeks (127 days) or older on the first day of class.

Temperament: Dogs must be comfortable being around other dogs and people. Excited and playful behavior is cool; but dogs who are fearful or reactive, or who bark excessively in a manner that is uncontrollable or disruptive should instead look into private lessons with an experienced dog trainer first.

Vaccine: For Dog Training I we require dogs to have their rabies vaccine and up-to-date DHLPP/DHPP vaccine. Proof of vaccination may be required at the first class.

Handlers: We require at least one adult per enrolled dog. We encourage the whole family to attend the class together but if children are three years or younger, a second adult must be present.
